Jingle Orchestrology

Oakland, fall 2008

(2008, Interactive performance, video)

The Oakland Jingle Orchestra is the second Jingle Orchestra that I've organized. It is an appeal to gather the public to think about the place they live, celebrate it and build community. I organized an open call to the local public (“Seeking singers and musicians, amateurs ok”) to get together and write/record (preferably not ironic) jingles about Oakland. A small yet well-versed group showed up, developed and recorded three jingles. The group is flexible and open, currently featuring myself, Ari Fellows-Mannion, Heather Davison, Ryan Bebe, Orlando Xavier, Liz Harvey, Nathaniel Parsons, Stewart Port, Aaron Strickler , Henry Boyle, Dan Nelson and Myles Boisen. I hope the orchestra will take on its own life and continue, and I plan to found more Jingle Orchestras worldwide. The first was started in Jyderup, Denmark in April 2008. C'mon, Sing Along!

MEET MY FRIEND OAKLAND
Meet my friend Oakland
          (Hi, how’re you doing?)
It’s friendly warm & open
          (C’mon, Gimme a hug)
An art and music haven
          (I love your new work)
You can be whoever you are
Oakland
OH OH OAKLAND
Oh oh oh Oakland
Do you believe we’ve got soul?
Oh oh oh Oakland
Do you believe there’s no toll?
We’ve got you
All over our skin
You touched us
Forever again
We’ll never
                     Never
Ever
                     Ever
Wash up

Jyderup, Denmark, spring 2008

(2008, Interactive performance, video)
I organized an open call to the local public to get together and write/record a jingle about Jyderup, Denmark. We wrote the song, “Velkommen til Jyderup” in less than 90 minutes.

I also worked with different classes at an alternative school nearby where the students were faster and more enthusiastic to write and record such songs as “Jyderup Suxx” and "The Lake". In addition, I wrote a few of my own.
